During our visit to New York this summer, Rachel was always disoriented because there were no visible landmarks (like mountains) to give a sense of direction. She would ask how we knew which was was which. Those of us natives to the area usually reply that we get our bearings from Lake Ontario, which is always north. Of course Rachel would ask how we knew where the Lake was, when it usually isn't seen. My reply: "I just feel it in my bones."
Lake Ontario is a very large lake. Of course you can't see across the lake from one shore to another. Canada lies on the other side of the Lake from us, some 70 miles away.
We took a short visit to the Lake so Rachel could see the source of our sense of navigation.
